In terms of electricity production (Switzerland's role as a water
fortress) and grid operation (Switzerland's role as an electricity hub),
a reliable, competitive supply of electricity is of paramount importance for our country and its economy.
The debate on a reliable supply of electricity in Switzerland and the future electricity mix has begun,
and is set to grow even more heated over the next few months and years.
Politicians are being asked to lay down stable boundary conditions as a
basis for making the requisite corporate decisions.
swisselectric members want to guarantee energy security
in Switzerland and create added value for our economy. The country's
energy security can be ensured by building new large power plants which
can deliver home-grown electricity. Existing hydro and nuclear power
plants must be more optimally deployed, renovated and replaced in good
time by new facilities. Until then it may be necessary to ensure energy
security by means of large temporary plants (e.g. gas-fired
combined-cycle power plants).
Negotiations on an electricity
accord have commenced with the EU. The aim of the accord is to ensure an
optimal position for Switzerland within the swift-changing European
electricity market. The strengths of Switzerland's sector, such as
hydroelectricity, transit and its role as an electricity hub, must be
preserved and aligned to cater to forthcoming Europe-wide developments..
